Succulents-Grass-Moss-Earthy-Ethnic-Chicago-Wedding-4Saturday’s bride, Iwona, asked us for a “green” wedding, something environmentally mindful and ecologically pure. An exciting challenge! The reception was held at one of the most beautiful natural settings Succulents-Grass-Moss-Earthy-Ethnic-Chicago-Wedding-2in the Chicago land area; the former country estate of Daniel and Ada Rice — now a forest preserve in Wheaton, IL called Danada House. The centuries old trees, beautifully planted gardens, and flowering shrubs that surround the house are just perfect to help fulfill a Iwona’s dream

We set the table with centerpieces that combined a collection of grasses, mosses, succulents, and all green flowers. Including trick dianthus, Fuji mums, and jade dendrobiums. We even added twigs for a more rustic look.

The placement of the people is important, but the placement of their seating cards is equally important. That’s our job — to create an environment for those cards.

Imaginative-Place-Cards-Tables- Chicago -Style-5Brides (and their mothers) often tell me that one of their hardest tasks is the seating! Which couples will enjoy each-others company, who’s not speaking to whom, and what brave soul to seat next to opinionated and cranky Aunt Mable?

The Escort Card Table plays a very important role in the wedding design. It usually is the first thing people see when they arrive. And as we all know, first impressions are critical! — They can set the tone for the entire event.

Trendy Flower Girls: What’s New & What’s Adorable – Chicago Styles

The day of the cute little girl dropping petals from her basket is pretty much over. Most churches won’t allow it and besides, aren’t we all looking for something new? Here are a few ideas. Ask your florist to design a halo forTrendy-Flower- Girls- What’s -New-What’s-Adorable-Chicago-Styles-3 her head – she’s an angel isn’t she? We make them out of a wired ivy ring with tiny flora bunda roses and sometimes baby’s breath twined in. Instead of a basket, give her a little “kissing ball” made by covering a wet center with tiny daisy florets or button pom pons. She can hold it by a pretty satin ribbon. We proudly gave one of these to a little girl just before her trip down the aisle. She took it and delightfully said, “Cool, a ball!” and threw it on the floor! Needless to say she was a bit too young for the job.

PERSONALS 001 - CopyA word to the wise at this point. There is a rule of thumb in the wedding business – no one under the age of five! The little ones don’t really understand what it’s all about and tend to balk when they see so many eyes fixed upon them as they enter the aisle.

Chicago’s Informed Bride: Chic, Trendy and SAVVY!

“Educating the innocent” – “Pitfalls for the unwary” or “How to avoid unnecessary fees and expenditures” It’s best to be upfront with your budget if your vendor seems unwilling to accommodate you – look elsewhere. The best vendors will be happy to work with you – it’s an educational process and an interesting one as well. As an event florist I can give you some examples: Your flower choices affect my pricing – for instance one peony costs the same as three roses. One hydrangea equals two roses but is three times the size – more greens and a loose style will save you money(a paveed or tightly packed arrangement of all flowers is much more costly than a loose one with some greens) -. A Tall arrangement on a stand or high glass vase or riser is almost twice the cost of a low arrangement in a good-looking vase or dish. Having half high and half low arrangements is easier on the budget and gives a pleasing undulating effect to the room. Be sure to caution your florist to keep the low arrangement below eye level. I once had a client tell me “We want to be able to see each other’s jewelry!” Alternatively the tall arrangement needs to be tall enough to see under, and the “riser” narrow enough so that you can see around it easily. Test this at your sample showing. Continue Reading…
